Cliffside Ascent
Cliffside Ascent
Description: A steep, rocky cliffside tall enough to make traversal dangerous.
Tone & Feel: Massive and intimidating, jagged stone and falling rocks.
Tier: 1
Type: Traversal
Difficulty: 12
Potential Adversaries:
Giant Scorpion, Glass Snake, Construct, Deeproot Defender
Features
The Climb - Passive
Climbing up the cliffside uses a d12 Climb die that starts at 1. Anytime PCs roll to progress on the cliffside ascent, use the following guide:
- Critical Success - Tick Up 3
- Success with Hope - Tick Up 2
- Success with Fear - Tick Up 1
- Failure with Hope - Tick Up 0
- Failure with Fear - Tick Down 1.
When the die should reach 13, it instead is cleared and the party has made it to the top of the cliff.
What strange formations do some of the stones look like? What ominous warnings did previous adventurers leave?
Pitons Left Behind - Passive
There are large metal rods left in the rock from previous climbers that may be used to keep a climber from falling. If they use the pitons during the climb, whenever PCs fall, they only mark a Stress and tick up the Climb die by +1.
What do the shape and material of these pitons tell you about the previous climbers? How far apart are they from one another?
Fall - Action
Spend a Fear to have the PC’s handhold fail, plummeting them towards the ground. If they are not saved on the next action, they will hit the ground and tick up the Climb die by +2. The PC takes physical damage equal to 3 times the current value of the Climb die.
How can you tell many others have fallen here before? What lives in these walls that might try to scare adventurers into falling for an easy meal?
